In Memoriam: Edward Francis

Edward Francis, a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend, passed away on July 6, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. He was a tireless educator, teaching at several schools around southern California, maintaining a full-time private studio, and organizing and helping out with many not-for-profit musical organizations. He treated every student he taught as family, and would travel internationally to hear them play and celebrate their achievements. He was the founder of the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic, an orchestra dedicated solely to playing concerti with music students from the community, providing an experience that is rare, yet so important, to young musicians.

We are very sad to have lost someone so important and central to our musical life. Everyone who met Edward was touched by his generosity. His teaching studio was a mecca for run-throughs, house concerts, and musical parties. His legacy will live on through his students, who have gone on to careers from performing and conducting to medicine and computer science. All of us will forever wave the flag of the Francis Studio.
